about us

A group of dental professionals harnessing the power of a
smile to change lives.

Power of a Smile

To provide the gift of a restored smile to women and men who have been formerly incarcerated or are survivors of domestic violence and are committed to rebuilding their lives.

To build and grow a strong community of supporters who share our vision and sustain our ability to provide oral health services and resources until every formerly incarcerated individual or domestic violence survivor without access to dental care has been provided with this opportunity.

Smiles and beyond is the Hub in the Wheel of Care where all participants, dental professionals, partnering organizations, and supporters are connected. To be the source where those that need help meet those that can help.

Core Beliefs

We Believe…
A changed smile can change a life. A changed smile can provide a second chance. A changed smile can improve health. A changed smile can renew a person’s dignity. A changed smile can restore hope.

Founded, Supported, and Led by Dental Professionals.
Smiles and Beyond* was founded in 2009 by Linda Parker Smith, a dental industry professional, who after attending a moving presentation held by Alongside Ministries, “felt the hands of God on her shoulders urging her to take up the mission of helping the underserved by “Giving Them a Smile”. From that time until her retirement at the end of 2020 she worked to create an extensive network of volunteer dentists, specialists, labs to support Smiles by making the gift of a smile possible.

In 2018, A. T. Still University, joined us as a partner provider. In 2019, Dr. Maureen Perry, Director of the Center for Advanced Oral Health at A.T. Still University, School of Dentistry & Oral Health was named President of the Smiles Board of Directors.

In 2020, Dr. Lori Riedel, a Registered Dental Hygienist, with years of experience in promoting oral health and program administration, joined Smiles as the Executive Director to lead the next era of growth. Lori’ s mission is to continue the work started by Linda. Her personal mission is to help those in need “find their smiles both on their face and in their souls”.

*Originally founded as Smiles Beyond the Bars, the name was changed to Smiles and Beyond in early 2019 to reflect added programming to address the needs of the survivors of domestic violence and stress ‘Beyond’ as the power of a smile that could lead to opportunities for change beyond current conditions.
